Superintendent's Message March 2019

MUSD Community,

MUSD Community,

As a former high school baseball coach, this is always one of my favorite parts of the year. Spring Training is here; the high school season is getting underway for baseball, softball, and other spring sports, and of course, little league parades. We’ve had just about all the rain we can handle this year, but often it seems like little league parades are certain to bring rain no matter how rainy it has been. Rain or shine, there are many exciting things happening across MUSD. Check out some of the highlights here:

Alumni News - Mackenzie Duarte Breaks Record and Qualifies for NCAA Championships

Congratulations to former AHS Bulldog, Mackenzie Duarte, who qualified this weekend for a spot in the NCAA Championships.  Mackenzie, in her sophomore season, swam a 2:09.47 in the breaststroke to shatter the Washington State University record by two seconds!  We are all proud of you, Mackenzie and wishing the best of luck in the NCAA Championships!

Congratulations to our Classified Employees of the Year!

It was an honor to recognize just some of our outstanding classified staff in Martinez Unified. Every employee in MUSD directly contributes to the success of our schools and to the learning that happens in each classroom.  During our last Board of Education Meeting we recognized the following employees for being selected from their school site/program to be honored as a classified employee of the year:

Christen Billecci - Alhambra High School

Michelle West - Vicente Martinez High/Briones Independent Study

Jessica Robinson - Martinez Junior High School

Tracey Yearick - Las Juntas Elementary

Diane Ferreira - Morello Park Elementary

Janice Tacconi - John Swett Elementary

Veronica Ruan - John Muir Elementary

Nicole Gero - Martinez Adult Education

Sue Casey - District Office

A special shout-out to Janice Tacconi who will represent MUSD in our Contra Costa County program for Classified Employee of the Year.  Mrs. Tacconi was selected among all her peers for this top honor!

Say Something Week

Last week was Say Something Week, and over 3000 schools across the nation participated in events to help bring greater action and awareness toward school safety.  As the first district in all of Contra Costa County to have Sandy Hook Promise programs fully implemented, we hosted a great event for our students at Alhambra High School. The event was hosted by our AHS SAVE Club (Students Against Violence Everywhere). Thanks to Nicole Hockley, co-founder of the Sandy Hook Promise, for coming to talk with our students.  Students also heard from District Attorney Diana Becton, Assembly Member Tim Grayson, as well as a video appearance from Congressman Mike Thompson and a letter from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier. It was incredibly inspiring to see how many people showed up and made time to speak with our students.  When students are taking action and initiative to create positive change, having so many elected officials and people of influence show up to honor their efforts is great positive reinforcement. I am very proud of all the students involved with this program!

MUSD Budget Information

As you may have seen in news headlines in the Bay Area, school funding is an issue gaining more and more attention.  Like many other local districts, our funding is increasing next year but budget reductions will still be required. The level of funding we receive, even with moderate increases in recent years, is not enough to keep pace with underfunded and unfunded mandates.  Our District will need to make reductions ranging from approximately $300,000 to $500,000 for the upcoming school year. As is always the desire, we will work to ensure that these potential reductions are kept as far away from the classrooms and the students as possible.  If you are interested in reading more information about school funding in California, I’d encourage you to visit the CSBA (California School Boards Association) website: www.fullandfairfunding.org.  If you are interested in more information about our local budgets for MUSD, you can always contact me directly.

Local Control Accountability Plan

There is still time, and we still want to hear from you!  Each year, as part of our Local Control Accountability Plan (our plan to accomplish our goals and plans for MUSD), we ask for community feedback on our schools, our programs, and our progress.  Please take just a few moments and complete the annual survey. Here are the links for both the English and Spanish versions of the survey:

Welcome Mr. David Wildy - Coordinator of Technology Services

Please join me in welcoming Mr. David Wildy to MUSD.  Mr. Wildy was approved by our Board of Education recently and will begin working with MUSD on March 18, 2019.

Mr. Wildy received his Bachelor of Arts from San Jose State with a major in Music Performance and a minor in History.  He later earned his Masters Degree from California State East Bay in Public Administration - Public Management and Policy Analysis.  Mr. Wildy has worked for California State East Bay and comes to Martinez Unified with a wealth of experience as the Director of Housing IT and Administrative Services.  In this role, David oversees and supervises staff in the areas of IT, Facilities, and Purchasing. He brings direct experience in managing the software, hardware, servers, and database coordination/management.  In addition, David has experience in training staff on a variety of technology areas, including Google Apps for Education products and overseeing the new technology infrastructure during construction of new facilities.

David’s work ethic, experience, and training will provide an excellent foundation of leadership for our Technology staff and all our schools.

Sincerely,

CJ Cammack, Superintendent
