Superintendent's Monthly Message - Aug 2016

Superintendent's Monthly Message for August 2016

CJ.pngMUSD Community,

Ready...Set...Go! The school year is quickly approaching and we are working to make 2016-2017 a terrific year for our Martinez Unified staff and students. Students return to school on August 23rd. As a parent, I am ready for the routine of school to return for my children, but I will miss the flexibility and freedom of their summer schedule.

As a former teacher and principal, I always feel this is the most appropriate time to say "Happy New Year". Each school year brings a fresh opportunity for staff, students and parents to set new goals for performance and growth. I am extremely excited to see the new accomplishments our students will achieve, and most certainly the new ways our educators will support students.

I am hopeful you find these newsletters helpful in maintaining communication across our schools and community, while also providing timely information. If you did not see last month's newsletter, here is a link, http://www.martinezusd.net/supmonthly

As you may be aware, Kim Thompson, Principal of John Muir Elementary, resigned last week to pursue other professional and personal goals. I wish Mrs. Thompson the best of luck in these endeavors. We will begin the year with an Interim Principal at John Muir while we conduct a thorough recruitment and selection process. I am confident that because of the dedicated and talented John Muir staff we will have a great start to the year for all Timberwolves.

If you are following along via Twitter, @CJMUSD, you may have seen some of the work completed this summer across Martinez Unified. I am grateful to our facilities/maintenance staff, custodial staff, business office, and the construction teams working so hard this summer. Some of the projects being completed this summer include:

  • HVAC installation at Las Juntas and John Swett
  • Landscaping for the front of Las Juntas
  • Roofing at John Swett
  • Painting at Las Juntas
  • Trim painting at Alhambra
  • New parking layout at Alhambra (front lot) to accommodate a new classroom building "K"
  • Site work for the new classroom building at Alhambra (work to continue after summer)
  • New school construction for Vicente/Briones (work to continue after summer)
  • Replace facias and gutters at Morello Park
  • Repair cooling tower and sealing/striping of Kindergarten play yard at John Muir
  • Replace Vinyl Composition Tile in select locations at MJHS
  • Deep cleaning and routine maintenance across all sites

Whether you are counting down in excitement to send your students back to school, or longing for just a few more weeks of summer, the first day of school will be here on August 23, 2016! The new school year is full of promise and adventure. I look forward to working with each of you to provide the very best for the students and staff of Martinez Unified.

Please take a moment to review the additional information provided below.

Sincerely,

CJ Cammack, Superintendent

Mark your calendars and start warming up for the Shell/MEF Run for Education on October 2, 2016. Martinez Education Foundation (MEF) recently awarded grants in the amount of $168,120 to Martinez Unified School District classrooms, teachers, and students. MEF is a tremendous support for the great work happening in our schools.  Thank you to Shell Oil for their continued support and partnership with MEF and in support of our schools. I hope you'll join me on October 2, 2016. You can run, jog or walk, just don't miss this great event!
