Superintendent's Message - February 2018

MUSD Community,

Don’t blink; the time is going faster than we think!  Time is a variable that we often take for granted until the circumstances of life offer some context, often around events related to starting school, graduation, etc. We are finished with the first semester, and for some of our students this means they only have roughly four months of school left before they graduate from high school. That mix of excitement and accomplishment can seem far away for many of our younger students, but given the context of time, it is often helpful to cherish the moments by realizing that even for your Kindergartners there are only a handful of months before they are in first grade, or before your fifth grader enters middle school, or your eighth grader becomes a freshman.  For each student and their individual progression in our schools throughout Martinez Unified School District, I am grateful to stand side by side with such committed professionals who remain focused on providing the best possible experience for your student.

February marks a month full of many exciting events and celebrations for our students and staff. For starters, next week will mark the 100th day of school for our Kindergarten/TK students. If you don’t know, this is a pretty big deal for Kindergarten/TK students, and the celebrations and activities are second to none.

When it come to reasons for celebrating, the Martinez Education Foundation has given MUSD $142,456 reasons to jump for excitement!  MEF has once again funded an incredibly generous amount of school-based and classroom-based grant requests which directly support our students of today!  Our teachers and schools are already working to order their desired materials, technology, and other wonderful programs for kids thanks to the annual MEF grant process.  MEF remains a fantastic pillar of support for our schools and classrooms throughout MUSD, and I am so appreciative of their unwavering commitment to keep MUSD at the top of the charts!

This month also marks the annual recognition for some of our annual teacher of the year awards for Martinez Unified. On February 26th, at our regularly scheduled Board of Education Meeting we will recognize one teacher from each site for their incredible work and dedication to the students of Martinez Unified.  As I am sure you can imagine, all our teachers are worthy of celebration and applause so it is always nice when we have occasions to provide them with specific recognition.  In the March newsletter you’ll be able to see who was selected from each site and which teacher will move forward to represent MUSD in our countywide teacher of the year program.

Additionally, in March, we will recognize the incredible CSEA employees of the year from MUSD representing their schools and departments from across the district. Our classified staff serve as the backbone of our overall operation in so many ways.  It is always a great event to recognize our selected classified staff and select one individual to represent MUSD in the countywide classified employee of the year program.

Continuing with the theme of time as a variable, February will also mark the fifth of our required five public hearings by the Board of Education as part of our efforts to respond to issues related to the California Voters Rights Act.  If you have not yet had a chance, please take a moment and review the final three maps being considered by our Board of Education for selecting new trustee areas. Throughout this process our Board of Education has considered 8 different drafts and, through thoughtfuls discussion and analysis, they have selected three maps for final consideration. They are identified as scenarios 6, 7, and 8. The following links provide a view of these draft maps with an overlay of Google Maps to help offer some real life context to how the trustee areas may be established. You can access the links here:

Please feel free to contact me directly should you wish to provide feedback on any of the options presented in three scenarios.
