Superintendent's Monthly Message - December 2016

CJ CammackMUSD Community,

What an incredible time to be a part in the city of Martinez and the schools of Martinez Unified! I am so appreciative of the support our community demonstrated during the recent election by passing Measure R.  The money from this general obligation bond will be the key to providing our staff and students with the type of learning facilities they deserve.  In the coming months and years I am looking forward to working through our Facilities Master Plan with our community of stakeholders and our Board of Education to design the best possible responses to the various facility challenges we face.  Along with passage of Measure D by the City of Martinez, our community will be see many tangible improvements over the next few years.  Thank you again to each of you who expressed your support for our students and staff with the passage of Measure R.

Additionally, I am very pleased to share that our Board of Education and District Administration recently moved forward with efforts to refinance parts of our previous general obligation bond, Measure K.  Based on input from some of our financial consultants, we were able to capitalize on a change in interest rates from our initial sale of the bonds in prior years.  Once the process was complete we reached a savings of almost $1,700,000 for our community.  This net savings doesn't provide additional money for school district budgets.  Rather, this refinancing is a savings that is provided to the community and the voters of Martinez Unified by decreasing the amount owed, via taxes, on our prior bonds.

I am excited to announce that our Vicente/Briones students and staff will begin using their new campus, across from our district office, after winter break.  As you may be aware, there have been many things beyond our control which have delayed the completion of this new school.  During my many walkthroughs of the campus in the recent weeks, it is clear that the finished product will be worth the wait.  Our students and staff will use the new campus for one day prior to the start of winter break (December 22nd - a minimum day) to get acquainted with their new school.  I look forward to sharing some of the pictures from our upcoming ribbon cutting ceremony.

Sadly, I am closing this month's newsletter with a very heavy heart.  Our Martinez Unified School District and the Morello Park Elementary community suffered a great loss with the recent death of Mrs. Claire Reidenbach.  I had the privilege to work alongside Mrs. Reidenbach when I was the principal of Morello Park, and I can attest to her incredible work ethic, her warmth and compassion for students and colleagues, and genuine passion for providing a great learning experience for her students.

While this news remains very difficult process, I would like to express my appreciation to the Morello Park staff and community for their courage and commitment during this difficult time.  It was once stated by Henry Adams, "A teacher affects eternity; he (she) can never tell where his (her) influence stops."  It is in this quote we can realize the sheer magnitude of Mrs. Reidenbach’s work.  In her nineteen years with MUSD, she likely averaged around 27 students in her class each year.  Over her career with MUSD she ultimately affected the lives of 513 students, each of them impacting the life of so many others. Some of them are now college graduates, others may still be in middle school or high school, yet each one of her 513 students has been molded by her compassion, dedication, professionalism, and skill.  Mrs. Claire Reidenbach, you will be missed by so many members of your Martinez Unified family; you will most certainly not be forgotten.

During this holiday season, please spend those precious extra minutes sharing your love with family and friends.
