MUSD Community,

It’s Homecoming week!  This is always a great week to celebrate our community and our schools.  See you at the parade on Main Street this Friday afternoon.

I hope you had a chance to join us this past weekend for another great event in our community, the 16th annual Shell/MEF Run for Education. There were over 800 runners who turned out for this event which directly supports our local schools and students. This year’s event was so successful that Shell Oil presented the Martinez Education Foundation with a check for $90,000. This money is a huge support to the overall fundraising efforts for MEF. Just last school year, MEF was able to provide over $160,000 in funding directly to our schools and to teachers who submitted grants to support their classrooms and programs.

Thanks to Shell Oil, the Martinez Education Foundation, and the hundreds of volunteers who make this a successful event each and every year.  We hope to see you at next year’s Run for Education as we approach almost $1,000,000 in fundraising since the event started in 2003. Joseph Huang came in first in the men’s 10k category, and Sigrid Fallentine came in first in the women’s category.  Lev Afonine won the men’s 5k competition, and Lisa Allan of Martinez won the women’s category once again. The complete results are posted at this link.

I am very pleased to report that we have reached a tentative agreement with our Martinez Education Association (MEA) and our local Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) as well. These agreements are currently pending ratification with each respective union group and will be finalized pending their ratification and final approval of the Board of Education.  We are very lucky to have so many dedicated and talented employees who make our schools an excellent place for students. As a community and as a school district we can continue to collectively support the work of our teachers, classified staff, and administration. Great communities are built around great schools, and we must all work closely to help develop our students into great young adults.

November Elections

As we approach election season in Martinez, there are a few reminders I’d like to share with you.  I am hopeful you will all be using your voice to cast a vote in our upcoming elections. Here is some information you may want to review:

#1 - Martinez Unified School District - Parcel Tax Measure - Measure Q

MUSD has placed a parcel tax measure on the ballot, Measure Q.  Measure Q is an extension of the parcel tax which has been in place since 2008, with an increase of $25 per parcel. The total per parcel would be $75 (the current $50 parcel tax, plus the $25 dollar increase). This parcel tax will help maintain current programs and provide additional funding to support MUSD students, programs and schools. If you’d like more information on Measure Q, you can find it at this link.

All individuals who live within MUSD attendance boundaries will have a chance to vote on our Parcel Tax, Measure Q.

#2 District Election Boundaries

As you may know, this year is the first year our newly established “Trustee Areas” will be effective for the Martinez Unified School District Board of Education.  Only those of you who live in Trustee Area 1 and Trustee Area 3 will be voting in our School Board Election. If you are wondering what Trustee Area you live in, you can review that information at this link.

#3  Don’t Forget to Vote!
