Superintendent's Message - May 2018

Mindset, Intentionality, Instruction, Access

MUSD Community,

Each school year, as we turn the the calendar to May, I always think back to the years I taught 5th grade.  It was such a busy time; I was trying to make sure I had fully prepared each of my 34 students for success in and out of the classroom, yet at the same time they were leaning into the allure of summer and transitioning to middle school.  It is the month of May when it becomes important for everyone to finish strong!

This time of year also marks a number of wonderful events such as school and community functions, PTA and staff events, and student ceremonies.  As a community, these occasions give us a chance to share in the reflection of how far students have come and how fortunate we are to have amazing staff in MUSD to facilitate their growth and development.

Of course, none of those things happen without the additional ongoing commitment of our community and parent population.  Just in the last few weeks, I have been able to attend dinner dances and auctions for some of our elementary schools which are always a wonderful example of how our parents are willing to engage in the support of their local schools.  Of course, there are countless other examples recently too such as campus cleanup days, PTA-led staff appreciation events at school sites, and the day-to-day volunteering in the classrooms.

If you are following along with the MUSD social media channels (you can click to follow at the bottom of the newsletter), you may have already seen these great announcements, but they are worth repeating here too.  We have some celebrating to do!

Congratulations to these winners:

Jared Ruddell - Morello Park

Jared was selected as our MUSD Classified Employee of the Year for 2017-2018.  He moved on to compete at the county level, and was then selected to move forward as a representative for our entire county.  Jared will be representing MUSD and the entire county in the statewide, classified employee of the year competition. The Morello staff, students, and community are so proud of Jared, and we are too.

Andrea Salas - Alhambra High School

We shared in a prior newsletter that Andrea was selected as the MUSD Teacher of the Year for 2017-2018. It was recently announced that she was selected as one of four finalists from across all of Contra Costa County.  We will be wishing Andrea the best in the ongoing selection process and competition. From our perspective and that of the AHS staff, students and community, she is already the clear-cut winner!

Citizen of the Year Awards

Crystal Castaneda, Alan Kobylik, Juliet Stephenson

This past weekend at the Martinez Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Dinner, three individuals were recognized for their efforts and their excellence in our community. Congratulations to Juliet Stephenson on being named the Young Women of the Year for Martinez.  Alan Kobylik was named the Young Man of the Year for Martinez. Both AHS students are wonderful examples of commitment, character, and courage. Additionally, Crystal Castaneda, principal of Las Juntas, was named as the Educator of the Year for Martinez. Her work at Las Juntas and commitment to her community were celebrated, along with many other deserving individuals. Thank you to our Chamber of Commerce for honoring these three individuals.

I am certain that many more individuals and groups will be recognized for their great efforts and accomplishments as we move through the last six weeks of school (who’s counting).  As we enter the month of May and work to balance the hectic pace presented during this time of year, I encourage all of us to find moments where we can stay present and enjoy the gift each day provides, while also finding plenty of energy to finish the year strong!
