Superintendent's Monthly Message - November 2017

Mindset, Intentionality, Instruction, Access

Dear MUSD Community,

November has arrived, and we are already through a quarter of the school year. The holiday season will be quickly approaching, and before we know it 2018 will be just around the corner. Unfortunately, this past month has been filled with the tragic events of the northern California fires. As I have shared before, in each situation of tragedy and loss, there are stories of triumph, compassion, courage, and community pride - all the things that make our society so remarkable. I am hopeful that over the course of the next two months we can all take a moment to offer thanks and engage in acts of giving.

I hope you had the chance to read about some of the inspiring acts of giving our own Martinez Unified students have done to support fire victims. There were many stories of student clubs gathering supplies and stories of our staff providing for families suffering from loss.  We even have a special story about one of our students who baked cookies and raised $800, then provided that money to a family in need.  If you have time, take a look at this heartwarming piece. Thank you to any and all members of our staff, community, and student body who were able to offer their support to the victims of these fires.

Additionally, I would like to take just a moment to thank each of you for your patience and flexibility with the closure of our schools during the fires. This was very unexpected, and I recognize it put a burden on parents to secure care for their children. As I shared with you at that time, the safety of our staff and students remains our top priority.  The cancellation of our Homecoming events for Alhambra High School also required great patience and flexibility from our staff, students, parents, and our community. I am hoping you will be able to join us for the rescheduled Homecoming events. The Bulldogs will take on the College Park Falcons in what will surely be an exciting game. Don't go far at halftime either, the award winning AHS Marching Band and championship level AHS Cheer Squad will surely have another incredible halftime performance. With last week's victory over Northgate, the Dogs secured at least a share of the league title! The parade starts at 3pm, and we hope to see you all on Main Street or along the parade route. Go Dogs!!!

Please review the calendar below for details on events in November. This is a shorter month for school days due the observation of Veterans Day on Friday, November 10th, and the fall break November 20th-24th.

Drama Production

The Laramie Project

Come check out the fall AHS Drama Production of, The Laramie Project. This show includes students from Alhambra, Vicente, and Briones.  Out students work so hard to put together an incredible show  under the direction our exceptionally talented Drama teacher, Mr. Gerry Wiener.

This show is rated PG 13 (not an official rating), as it does contain mature themes and strong language. The play is for a mature high school audience, both thematically and in regards to some of the language.  We want parents to make informed choices, especially as it pertains to younger children in the audience. Here are the showtimes and details for tickets: 7 pm curtain on Wed Nov 1st & Thurs Nov 2nd. 2 pm curtain on Sat Nov 4. There is no Friday show. General $10, Students/Senior Citizens $8.
