Superintendent's Monthly Message - June 2017

CJ CammackMUSD Community,

It seems to have happened in only the blink of an eye.  As parents and guardians some of you may be feeling this sentiment as you watch your child promote from one level to another such as elementary to middle school or middle school to high school, while for others it may be just the completion of Kindergarten/Transitional Kindergarten that has you reflecting on how quickly the year passes. Congratulations to each of our seniors graduating from Martinez Unified School District this year.  I wish each of you the very best of luck in your future adventures.  May you all take the lessons, both academic and practical, and keep them with you on these adventures and know that you are able to accomplish any goal you set. The destination may not yet be known, but during your travels, be smart, be brave, and be good.  Be proud of who you are, be proud of where you come from, and we will be proud of you.

Over the next week I look forward to attending the many graduation and promotion events taking place within Martinez Unified School District.  Each of these events is a great chance for students, staff, and families to reflect and celebrate the accomplishments earned.  It may only be the student who walks across the stage to receive a diploma, but they most certainly didn’t reach that goal without the work and support of others.

If you happen to attend one of our graduations this year, I hope you and those close to you can take a moment and reflect on how our community plays such an important role in serving our students and our schools.  It is not just about the local businesses and organizations that give their community support, while we do appreciate their generous efforts.  Our community is also dependent on what we as parents and guardians provide for our students in their upbringing, their sense of right and wrong, their decision making, and their involvement in our local area.  I am incredibly proud of our students, but each time we close the school year, I am always extremely proud of our community in Martinez.  Thank you for a being a part of Martinez Unified.

I extend my sincere thanks to all our staff members at each school and our district office for their passionate pursuit of excellence this year.  I am hopeful they can enjoy a few days of relaxation over the summer.  I know many of our teachers will be working during the summer in trainings, teaching summer school, creating new material, and refining other aspects of their professional craft.  I admire the dedication of our MUSD teachers and certificated staff.  Of course many of our classified staff members will be working this summer too - some in summer school programs, while others work year round.  As referenced above, it is our community which also represents a significant part of our workforce in MUSD that helps make this a great district with great schools.

As our administration winds down the year, we will be analyzing student learning data and identifying trends and data points which can better help us ensure that our schools in MUSD are serving all students.  It is noted that not all students, nor all subgroups of students, are performing at the same level related to academic achievement.  Our goal will always be to create high levels of learning and achievement for all students in MUSD.  This focus will be laser sharp as we move into the coming school year of 2017-2018.

As the Superintendent, it is my distinct pleasure to offer my thanks to the entire staff in MUSD, the students, the community, and the Board of Education for the opportunity to lead and serve this district. I am already hard at work to make 2017-2018 our best year yet!  Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you all in our schools when you return in August.
