MUsd welcomes Dr. Julie Synyard As New Superintendent of schools

Dear Martinez School Community,

It is an honor to serve as the Superintendent for the Martinez Unified School District.  I want to thank the Board of Trustees for providing me with this incredible opportunity, and I am thrilled to lead the work of the district.  I am excited to meet the students, staff, families, and members of the community.  I look forward to working collaboratively with the MUSD team to help our students realize their academic hopes and aspirations.

I am joining the Martinez community after serving as the Assistant Superintendent of the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District for the past five years.  I have held a number of different positions during my career including teacher, activities director, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal, and these roles have afforded me the privilege of connecting with a diverse group of stakeholders and various communities.  I have been able to expand my learning in each role, and I eagerly anticipate the learning that will occur as I become familiar with the expectations of the Martinez Unified School Community.

While entering the district during COVID-19 will surely present many challenges, I am committed to working with our Board of Trustees and the staff to ensure our educational delivery during distance, hybrid, or in-person learning will meet the needs of our students and families.  State Board of Education President, Linda Darling Hammond, stated, “Today’s massive disruption in K-12 schools could create something of an educational renaissance.  We are in a moment in our country right now where the most important modus operandi is inventing and sharing.”  This sentiment resonates with me as we tackle new ways of delivering instruction, partnering with our families, and working to ensure all students develop both academic and social-emotional skills during the pandemic.  The sharing of information, divergent thoughts that target the status quo, and the usage of new technological resources during this time inspire me.  Together we can continue to build upon the strong foundation of learning established in the Martinez Unified School District and ensure all of our students have access to new learnings while experiencing a deep sense of belonging.

The District is clear in its areas of impact for student learning and has established a Framework of Focus.  This framework which highlights safety, equity, integrity, education, and communication will be the guiding principles of my work.  These tenets will support our efforts to guarantee that all are valued in our organization and demonstrate the transparency with which we hold ourselves accountable.  I will take time to listen and gain perspective regarding the school district organization and the community, and I will be visible and active in the school and community.  I thank the community for trusting me with its most valuable assets, our children, and I take that responsibility extremely seriously.  I am proud to be a part of the MUSD team!
