SHORT-TERM INDEPENDENT STUDY

Short-term Independent Study may be an option for student who have unavoidable absences that will result in missing a minimum of 3 and up to 14 consecutive school days. Prior to going on independent study, the student will be provided coursework that will account for each day the student will be absent.  The request for short term independent study must be received by the school at least 7-10 school days prior to the first expected date of absence.  Requests for independent study over 10 school days MUST be pre-approved by the Principal.  Independent Study for absences of 15 days or more is offered through Briones Independent Study.

BRIONES INDEPENDENT STUDY SCHOOL

Briones offers an alternative to in-person instruction for grades TK-12.  Courses are completed outside of a traditional school setting.  Student meet weekly with a certificated teacher to develop an individual learning plan to make progress towards standard/course completion.

Independent Study Daily Live and Synchronous Instruction Offerings

Transitional Kindergarten to grade 2 - daily live synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.

Grades 3 to 8 - both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.

Grades 9 to 12 - at least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.

"Live interaction" means interaction between the student and district classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including but not limited to: wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services and instruction.  This interaction may take place in person or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.

"Synchronous instruction" means classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communications and involving live, two-way communication between the teacher and student.  Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for that student.

Written learning agreements must be signed before a student commences an independent study course.
